In the first response to Washington’s decision to suspend over 250 million dollars of military aid, the Egyptian Foreign office is saying that it is a mistake.
Egypt is speaking out against the US’s decision to suspend part of the military aid calling it a mistake. In an interview with Egyptian radio a senior member of the office said that “Egypt will not surrender to US Pressure and will continue on its way to democracy, as was determined”.
The Egyptian response comes following the American government’s announcement that military aid to Egypt, estimated at 260 million dollars, will be suspended. The aid includes F-15 airplanes, tanks, helicopters and missiles. However, the US will continue to supply most of the aid that is designated for the Egyptian public for things such as education and health, as well as military aid that is important for the Israeli – Egyptian cooperation.
American newspaper the “Wall Street Journal” reported yesterday that Jerusalem is also concerned about the American decision to suspend military aid in order to pressure the regime in Egypt into democracy. “Suspending aid could have terrible consequences” a source in the Israeli government said. “It signals to the entire Middle East that the US is backing away, and isn’t interested in being involved in the area.
It will affect the US’s status from Morocco to Saudi Arabia”. However, Obama’s government insist that Egypt will continue to be a strong military ally despite the suspension of aid, that should not, according to them, hurt the cooperation with Israel.
